Situation: Catherine decided not to take any antimalarials as she was concerned about potential side effects. Despite using insect repellent while on holiday and trying to cover up as much as possible, Catherine was bitten several times by mosquitoes on a camping trip near Lake Victoria.

Outcome: Two weeks after her return, Catherine was hospitalised with malaria. It took a year for her to fully recover during which time she suffered from weight gain, hair loss and depression.
