NAME:
Tara Sherjan (nee Emery)

AGE WHEN CONTRACTED MALARIA:
33

OCCUPATION:
Fundraising Manager

WHERE DID SHE CONTRACT THE DISEASE:
Orissa, India

TYPE OF TRAVEL:
Business trip

Situation: Tara contracted malaria whilst working in India.
She was taking her antimalarials, but unfortunately suffered a bout of food poisoning, making her vomit continuously and preventing the medication from working properly.

Outcome: It wasn’t until six months later at Christmas, when Tara had returned to the UK, that she fell seriously ill. She began to experience a high fever, headaches, backache and extreme fatigue. A trip to the doctor concluded that she was suffering from malaria and she was sent straight to hospital for urgent medical treatment. Luckily for Tara, the treatment came just in time. The experience has taught her how important it is to take all the necessary precautions when visiting a country with malaria. Tara urges people to use bite prevention methods in combination with antimalarials to ensure the best possible protection against the disease.
