Name:
Adam Metselar

Age when contracted malaria:
19

Occupation:
Student at the time of travels

Where did he contract the disease:
The Congo

Type of travel:
Gap Year

Situation: Adam Metselar contracted the most lethal form of malaria, falciparum, whilst on holiday in the Congo. As a healthy nineteen year old, he was care-free and felt indestructible when he set off on his year-long trip around the world. He did not seek travel health advice and was unaware of the potential illnesses he could contract while travelling. Now he believes that just 15 minutes consultation with a healthcare professional would have given him all the advice and recommended treatment to protect himself against malaria.

Outcome: Adam lost four stone in weight and was unable to work for six months. He remained unwell for nearly a year and continues to feel easily worn out, especially in the summer months.
