Malaria affects 2,000 UK travellers every year. Malaria can be a fatal disease and travellers visiting malarious destinations should seek travel advice from a health care professional. Malaria is contracted by being bitten by an infected mosquito, so bite avoidance and the use of antimalarials should always be followed as recommended. Malaria is endemic in areas of Africa, South East Asia and South America, so travellers visiting these destinations should seek travel health advice and protect themselves against malaria.
